Dickens Quarterly
Author Guidelines

Dickens Quarterly is edited by David Paroissien, Emeritus Professor of English, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and publishes articles up to 9,000 words, shorter essays, notes and reviews. Contributors are asked to submit one typescript copy to the editorial address below and a Word file (.doc or .docx) to <>. Typescripts will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed envelope and the cost of return postage, either in pounds sterling or in International Reply Coupons. Every effort will be made to decide on acceptances as soon as possible. DQ house style uses footnotes rather than endnotes, requires textual references to include both pagination and chapter number (00; ch. 00) and, where relevant, the book and chapter number (00; bk. 1, ch. 5). Citations from any of the following are acceptable: Oxford UP Clarendon editions of the novels; Everyman editions, Norton Critical Editions, and Penguin English Classics. For references to Dickens’s journalism, please use the abbreviation Journalism and cite the appropriate page and volume number of The Dent Uniform Edition of Dickens’ Journalism, ed. Michael Slater and John Drew, 4 vols. London: J. M. Dent, 1994–2000. Similarly, references to Dickens’s letters should appear in the text as (Letters 00: 000) and refer to The Letters of Charles Dickens, ed. Madeline House, Graham Storey, et. al 12 vols. Oxford: Clarendon, 1965–2002. For references to Forster’s Life by book and chapter number (bk. 00; ch. 00), please use either John Forster, The Life of Charles Dickens, ed. A. J. Hoppé, 2 vols. London: J. M. Dent, 1966, or John Forster, The Life of Charles Dickens, ed. J. W. T. Ley, London: Cecil Palmer, 1928. A more detailed “Guide for Contributors” is sent upon the acceptance of a submission.
